Sometimes it feels like we have covered every walk and path near the area we live in. But then you find a new hidden gem and it is so exciting!! These walks are generally pretty quiet and all very different to one another.
1. Blackdog Beach, Near Balmedie
Blackdog Beach is just north of Aberdeen, before you reach Balmedie, and off the A90. It may not be quite as spectacular or dramatic as the rolling dunes of Balmedie Beach, but it is a great place to visit for a change. It also has the benefit of being a lot quieter.
You can walk as little or as far as you want along the coast here.
2. Plockton Woods, Ellon
Plockton Woods, or Lochills as the locals call it, is a new find for us. This walk is 4km long which took us just under an hour. The walk begins at the car park and you walk in a circular route round the edge of the woods. You get some beautiful views out over the countryside!
This walk is a brilliant option for dogs as it is so quiet and there are no roads to cross or walk along once you get on to the paths. There is also a river to pass so they can stop for a cool down and drink.
3. Gight Castle, Methlick
Gight Castle was actually where we got the inspiration behind Aberdeenshire Walks! Maybe this is why it is our favourite hidden gem on this list! Gight is a ruined castle that was once owned by the late poet Lord Byron. The castle is also shrouded in mystery and tales - and they’re not all pleasant!
There is something quite eerie about Gight, but it really is quite like nowhere else. The whole walk takes you around the estate and is 8km long. This took us around 2 hours and we highly recommend trying it out!
4. Mormond Hill, Strichen
Did you know there is a giant white horse and a giant white stag in Aberdeenshire? You can find these iconic structures on Mormond Hill in Strichen and they are definitely worth visiting. They are made out of quartz rocks and the horse is visible from the village.
At the top of this hill there is also an ancient hunting lodge. The walk is about 5km and will take just over an hour, although you can extend the walk if desired.
5. Troup Head Nature Reserve, Banffshire Coast
Another new discovery for us, Troup Head Nature Reserve is a stunning shorter walk! You can either park near the reserve, or begin the walk from Crovie if you want something a little longer.
The walk takes you along the dramatic clifftops. What makes this hidden gem walk stand out as special is the wildlife you will encounter. The cliffs are home to thousands of birds - puffins, razorbills,
We hope this gives you some new walking ideas, and you love these paths as much as we do! And of course, we are always looking for new hidden gems in Aberdeenshire to share with you.
